Family Memories
On a very personal note, about three weeks before we left for TNNA, our beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Smokey, was diagnosed with canine lymphoma. We took him to Santa Fe before Memorial Day to the Oncologist to get a better diagnosis and to see what treatment she would recommend. Well, for any of you who have ever gone through this, you know chemotherapy is quite expensive--around $6-7,000--with an average life-after-diagnosis of about 1 year. Wow! Kind of bleak. The oncologist felt like Smokey had the more aggressive form of lymphoma since he had not responded well to the medication he had been given. After some consideration for his quality of life, we determined that we would not put him through the pain and agony of chemo. We kept him on his medication regiment, gave him lots and love and attention, and prepared ourselves for what was to come. Our wonderful Smokey was brave and never seemed to complain, continued to play with our two other schnauzers and Bernese Mountain dog mix. We even had time after TNNA to get our family portrait made to always remember our first schnauzer. We lost our little Smokey on June 19. He was 11 years old.
